About the position -

Summary: Prepares histologic slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by a pathologist by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

· Accessions and grosses specimens, as needed.

· Operates computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved for study by the pathologist.

· Prepares slides of specimens to enhance visibility under a microscope. Appropriately stains slides.

· Examines slides under a microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements. Detects deviations from expected results and reports abnormalities for further study.

· Performs special stains and immunohistochemistry procedures, if applicable.

· Responsible for preventative maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment and laboratory computers.

· Keeps accurate records including but not limited to equipment preventative maintenance and repair, QA and QC records, temperature and equipment charts, safety procedures, training, exposure, and waste management.

· Assumes responsibility for keeping the work area clean, neat, and organized.

· Prepares chemicals and stains for performing tests. Uses all chemicals following safety procedures.

· Maintains accurate and adequate inventory of reagents and supplies. Tracks utilization and expiration dates.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education/Experience:

An earned associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology obtained from an accredited institution. OR
Education/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination. In addition, the individual must have laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), OR at least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
There are exceptions to these regulations for staff performing high complexity testing prior to April 24, 1995*. In these cases, consult the CLIA regulations and have the medical director of the laboratory evaluate the staff member.

*The CLIA-88 regulations include exceptions for grandfathered individuals under regulations 42CFR493, 1489 and 1491

Language Ability:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write technical procedures. Ability to speak effectively to pathologists, customers, and employees of the organization.

Math Ability:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage. Ability to use weight scales and metric measurements.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving computers, equipment, or procedures.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing software and a basic understanding of Windows programs.

Certificates and Licenses:

H.T. or H.T.L. (ASCP) recommended
